An original  oil painting that captures  the strength, wisdom, and regal presence of the lion. Painted on fine linen with black aground, tihs is a powerful yet subtle piece. The delicate strands of hair around the mane, next to quite powerful brushstrokes make this so interesting. There always something new to see. The colour is mainly golden orchres and warm browns but as the mane disappears into the black, subtle midnight blues appear on the edge. The piercing amber eyes draw you in, while the luxurious mane flows with energy and movement.

As with all my lions, Midnight  is based on my real encounters on the Masai Mara. I stay at Offbeat mara camp, and the camp is fortunate to have the large offbeat pride close by, so lions become part of  daily life when there. They are truly wonderful animals and I remain mesmerised by them. this one was inspired by an evening, after sundowners , the time honoured tradion of a drink watching sunset, we heard lions roaring, form one pride warning off another. Our guides decided it might be the better part of valour to head back to camp and leave the lions to their night-time chorus.  I absolutely love to paint lions, each one is different and has its own unique energy.
