As with all my lions, Orsino is based on my real encounters on the Masai Mara. I stay at Offbeat mara camp, and the camp is fortunate to have the large offbeat pride close by, so lions become part of daily life when there. They are truly wonderful animals and I remain mesmerised by them. This one was inspired by an encounter one morning , when we met a lion sitting on the edge of his pride, He was watching the horizon line, whether he was fixed on possible rivals or a potential hunt we don’t know, but he waited with such presence I couldn’t take my eyes off him.
