Anandi, meaning joy, was inspired not by the African plains but by the vibrant streets of Singapore’s Little India. During a festival visit, I was struck by the riot of colour, the carpets of flowers and two towering elephants created entirely from blooms. That memory became the spark for this painting.
Layer upon layer of oil paint builds the intricate surface, each pattern and mandala hand-painted rather than collaged. Jewel-like colours, swirling details and festive motifs come together to create an elephant full of life and celebration.
At 60 x 60 cm, Anandi carries the presence and vibrancy of my larger elephants but in a more intimate size. This piece is a true one-off, not available as a print, for a collector seeking something unique.
