This beautiful oil painting is painted on natural linen canvas, and the linen is visible in the background. This gives the vibrant colours in the lion space to breathe. This is such a statement piece. They are incredible warm colours made from ochre, Naples yellow, Chinese orange, an Italian rose brown, these sit next to cool blues and greys. The colours are inspired by the surrounding landspcae, now incorporated into the lion.
As with all my lions, Lenkoe is based on my real encounters on the Masai Mara. I stay at Offbeat mara camp, and the camp is fortunate to have the large offbeat pride close by, so lions become part of daily life when there. They are truly wonderful animals and I remain mesmerised by them. Lenkoe is known for his powerful presence and his enormous mane. He is extremely powerful. We saw him one evening, and he was beautifully calm, watching out for the pride while the younger ones had their tea (after he had had the lion’s share of-course)!
