This beautiful oil painting is painted on natural linen canvas, and the linen is visible in the background. This gives the vibrant colours in the lion space to breathe. This is such a statement piece. They are incredible warm colours made from ochre, Naples yellow, Chinese orange, an Italian rose brown, these sit next to cool blues, pale pinks and greys.
The colours are inspired by the surrounding landscape, now incorporated into the lion.
As with all my lions, Gaze is based on my real encounters on the Masai Mara. I stay at Offbeat mara camp, and the camp is fortunate to have the large offbeat pride close by, so lions become part of daily life when there. They are truly wonderful animals and I remain mesmerised by them.
Gaze is a beautiful and extremely powerful lion.
This painting depicts Gaze staringinito the middl distance (hence the name) just before walking towards our jeep early one morning. He came so close I could have reached out and touched him.
