I love painting stags. Most of my stags are inspired by trips to the New forest - or from Longleat Safari Park where it's significantly easier to get reference photos! I’m even lucky enough to have some deer that can occasionally be seen at the bottom of our garden though they tend to be much smaller. This stag has been painted using layers of oil on a linen canvas. The elegant colour palette is made from naturalistic browns and greys with muted blues to elevate the colour mix of the stag. There are subtle areas left unpainted suggesting a fleeting glimpse of the stag. This use of negative space is extraordinary as our eyes and brains fill in the spaces for us. You will notice something new every time you look at him

Oil paintings aren’t framed under glass, so adding a frame later is easy and inexpensive.
