San Giorgio from St Marks at Dawn

This small oil painting is so special. If you have ever visited Venice, you will know that there are times of day when the crowds are almost overwhelming. However, if you can get up early enough and make it to Saint Mark’s before the sun comes up, you have the entire place all to yourself. I sat on the edge of Saint Mark’s Square looking out over the lagoon to San Giorgio Maggiore waiting for the Sun to come up. I watched as the sky went from inky black to a deep blue and eventually gave away to a beautiful sunny day. I recorded this in my sketchbook and when I returned home, couldn't wait to paint it in oils.
This painting though rather small is still able to capture some of the immediacy of those watercolour sketches I made on the spot but carries the weight and intensity of oil paints. This beautiful little painting could grace any little nook or corner of your home and bring back incredible memories of such a beautiful city.
