Last year I was lucky enough to stay in a villa very near to San Gimignano. V ery near to the little turning into a villa was a layby - it was a popular little spot with people to get out of their cars and get their cameras out. When we stopped, we realised why it was so popular, as soon as you hopped out of the car and looked over the hedge-row you had the most beautiful view of the towers of San Gimignano. As this was an early Autumn visit I've painted the flowers in gorgeous warm autumn colours with reds and yellows and oranges. With the towers in the distance. It was an absolute joy to see this view each morning as we drove off on our adventures for that day; in fact our nearest supermarket to stock up for supplies for the villa happened to be the San Gimignano co-op! What a treat.
So this lovely painting is a reminder of an everyday journey with an absolutely magical view. I painted it in my sketchbook and as soon as I returned to the studio , I knew this had to be committed to oil on canvas.
