This painting is so special. If you have ever visited Venice, you will know that there are times of day when the crowds are almost overwhelming. However, if you can get up early enough you have the entire place all to yourself. This painting is based on sketches made when in Venice and taking the Vaporetto out over to Lido. I sketched on teh ferry, lucky it was a clam day that day! I recorded my journey in my sketchbook and when I returned home, couldn't wait to paint it in oils.
This painting still able to capture some of the immediacy of those watercolour sketches I made on the spot but carries the weight and intensity of oil paints.
It’s a gentle, layered piece, Painted from sketches, and a special experience, this is one of those pieces that says everything without shouting.
