This painting is so special. If you have ever visited Venice, you will know that crowds often gather on the Academia bridge to watch the sun go down behind Santa Maria Salute. It’s a wonderful but busy sight. At dusk the golden hour in Venice is magical. I found a little spot and sketched the scene as best a could standing up and trying to ignore curious onlookers! When I returned home, couldn't wait to paint it in oils.
The last time I wan in Venice the weather was changeable and whilst some sketches were done in sunshine, others with in the rain and Love the effect of the spatters in my sketchbook. This full size oil painting is also trying to capture that feeling of sunshine and rain, with the drips, capturing the immediacy of those watercolour sketches I made on the spot but c the weight and intensity of oil paints.
It’s a gentle, layered piece, Painted from sketches, and a special experience, this is one of those pieces that says everything without shouting.
